College Admissions Simplified: A Guide for the College-Bound

In my almost three decades of successfully helping students and parents navigate the ever-changing process of college choice and application processing, I realized that many families are simply overwhelmed by all the information they need to sort through. There are many well-meaning, but ill-informed experts shouting in their ears. This leaves families at a loss about what to believe. Some of these families do not have the financial wherewithal to hire an IEC, and I have always believed that it is my responsibility to make my information available to anyone who needs it. This was my motivation to write the book.
Over the years, I have developed an approach to the college planning process that has proven successful for my students. My focus is, and always has been, on developing self-awareness in students so that they can make more informed decisions about their futures.

Encourage Them To Begin

I also encourage them to begin the search by thinking about what they want in a college rather than beginning with the names of colleges that they know. Once we have decided what is important to the life they will lead, we then discuss their academic accomplishments, rigor of curriculum, and other factors, including financial decisions, and only then do we put names to the balanced list of colleges which we create. This approach, and how to accomplish it, is clearly laid out in a step-by-step manner in my book which also includes tips for parents at this stressful time in their student’s life. I believe that while there is no substitute for the guiding hand of a knowledgeable and empathetic consultant in the process, following the path in the book is the next best thing.
