Consultant Services

Beginning a new business is a daunting process and it is often helpful to have someone with whom to share your dream in order to make it a reality. You are ready; now it is time to iron out the business wrinkles so that you can be successful. Sometimes, you don't even know the questions that you need to ask.
  • Where do I go for solid training?
  • What kinds of forms will I need to streamline my process?
  • How do I handle inquiry phone calls?
  • How do I close the deal?
  • How do I determine my fee structure?
  • What do I need to do to market my business?

Charlotte Klaar is familiar with these struggles as she has gone through them herself. In 1995, she realized her dream and developed College Consulting Services, based in MetroWest Massachusetts. She was able to educate a community on the need for and the benefit of using an independent educational consultant in their search for the right college fit for their children. After 15 years of successful work, she sold that company and in 2010 launched Klaar College Consulting (KCC) based in the Greater Washington DC area. While not giving up her work with college-bound students, she decided to make use of the expertise she had gained in her own business and her experience teaching for IECA, UCLA, and UC Irvine on the business aspects of the industry to launch the Consultant Services arm of KCC.

In the many years in which Charlotte taught and mentored others in this work, she realized that new consultants often felt that they needed more when they got back to their offices after having completed more formalized training. Once there, the insecurities set in and they needed help deciding with whom to advertise, what networking organizations to join, how to really assess fee structure in their home communities, what to do to organize a successful workshop or seminar, and how to deal with other issues of this kind. In addition, once back in the home office, they were alone, without the nurturing guidance of their teachers and mentors. Charlotte decided that there was a need to offer hands-on assistance to those who felt they needed or wanted more.

Before KCC will take you as a business consultation client, you must have completed the IECA Summer Training Institute, the IECA Transitioning to Private Practice workshop, or the UC Irvine Certificate in Independent Educational Consulting. These are the places to begin your training in the profession, and without at least one of these, my help will not be as effective for you.

KCC offers the following consultant services to newer consultants and to those who have reached a point in their careers where they need a change of process. She will provide:

  • Consultation by phone for questions about client service delivery
  • On-site service in the continental U.S. to assist with:
    1. Forms development
    2. Fee setting
    3. Workshop organization
    4. Process development
  • Assistance with client meetings
  • List Development assistance
  • Other assistance as requested
For those requesting on-site service at a distance from the DC area, Charlotte will be happy to travel to your location and bill accordingly. She wants this to be an affordable service and to be considered as part of normal start-up costs. Therefore, rates may be less than you expect. Call for details and we can customize a package for you.
