About our Executive Director, Charlotte Klaar

While searching for colleges with her own daughters, Charlotte Klaar became acutely aware of the struggles young people and their parents go through during the college selection and admissions process. She realized there was a need for someone to step in to assist families with this sometimes stressful experience. Charlotte's career experiences as a manager with a blue-chip Fortune 500 company and a teacher, and her life experience as a parent, inspired her to establish College Consulting Services.

Charlotte earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from the University of the State of New York, a teaching certificate from William Paterson University, and a Master of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Science Studies from Johns Hopkins University. She has done significant graduate work in the area of family psychology and is well-versed in the issues facing adolescents and their parents. Her quest to learn all she can about how people think and feel led her to pursue a PhD in General Psychology from Capella University. She is now at the dissertation phase of that program. In addition, Charlotte has been trained to administer and interpret both the Holland Self-Directed Search (SDS) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

She is proud to have qualified to be a Certified Educational Planner and holds membership in the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), and the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admissions Counseling (PCACAC).

Charlotte has extensive experience working with students and their parents. She has held various leadership positions with the Girl Scouts and several Parent Teacher Organizations in New Jersey (Packanack School), Maryland (Julius West Middle School and Richard Montgomery High School) and Massachusetts (Algonquin Regional High School), as well as serving as the first co-chair of the Algonquin School Council. Mrs. Klaar is a former member of the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce and served on their School/Business Partnership Committee for more than 10 years. She twice earned the Partnership's Business Recognition Award given to businesses that support education and area schools through their individual efforts. Charlotte also served as a founding member of the Greater Brunswick Chamber of Commerce in Brunswick, MD. She is as active in St. Francis/St. Mary Church in Maryland as she was in St. Rose of Lima parish in Massachusetts. Her commitment to community service activities has been evident throughout her life regardless of where she has lived.

In 1995, Charlotte realized her entrepreneurial dream and developed College Consulting Services based in MetroWest Massachusetts. She was able to educate a community on the need for and benefit of using an independent educational consultant in their search for the right college fit for their children. After 15 years of successful work, she sold that company and in 2010 launched Klaar College Consulting (KCC) based in the Greater Washington DC area. While not giving up her first love, work with college-bound students, she decided to make use of the expertise she had gained in her own business to launch the Consultant Services arm of KCC.

Charlotte is an active professional member of the IECA and a past member of its Board of Directors. She is current chair of the Board Development Committee and has been elected to serve on the Nominating Committee in the past. Charlotte has also served as an instructor in IECA's Summer Training Institute (formerly Practices and Principles Training Institute) for most of the past ten years and has twice served as Chair of the Institute. Currently, she teaches for both the College Counseling program at UCLA Extension and the Certificate in Independent Counseling at UC-Irvine. She has also taught at Assumption College in their Masters in School Counseling program.

A life-long learner herself, Charlotte consistently strives to keep her professional knowledge up-to-date both by visiting colleges nationwide and by maintaining awareness of changes in her profession.
